Jump in the water's fine !

After many reminders to oneself, so many notes and scribbled attempts, reading amazing, thought provoking blogs from my PLN I guess there's only one thing to do..Jump in and join the discussions. Thanks Matt for posing the question that helped me realise that my ideas don't have to be an essay, it's perfectly all right to comment, observe, describe a process or an idea.

"A  Real Cool Tool"

as described by a busy teacher, Tellagmi, https://tellagami.com/ a free iOS app, enables you to create a short animated movies.  As a technology teacher and coach, I’ve used  “Gamis” in a number of ways.  You first create and customise a character, and then choose a background, either from the app or your camera roll. This is where you can get to be creative, you can choose to either record your own voice or type in the text, the text to speech gives you a female or male voice with a few accents.
Some examples:
  1. Introduction  to a unit -- eg Control Technology -- I embedded this into our school Moodle page, the students can listen & view  my intro as well read text on our Moodle page.  This provided support for the less able readers.  http://youtu.be/D5YsXZPSr4k
  2. We use WALTS (We are learning to….) & WILFS (What I am looking for:)  as part of our lesson format. I used the Gami as an intro to the session. (I was actually away at this stage - Course was in Moodle and I had a substitute run the class ) Students responded in a forum… I could view from home and add comments) http://youtu.be/G4N2q0AOoEA
  3. Student evaluation - Reflection on progress, the students were required to think about 3 ICT skills they had learnt during their Habitat project.  They only have 3 mins if they record their voice and had to define what they were thinking, more reluctant students can use the text to speech facility, and that has a real impact. Using a tellagmi encourages reluctant students to express themselves, in a non threatening environment. These are uploaded into their ePortfolio as part of their reflection on their learning. Conversely they could be used to highlight "where to next", discuss their learning via "two stars and a wish". http://youtu.be/ozsXN8meyT4
  4. Coaching: Post little videos to introduce an idea, give someone a challenge, bring someone along virtually, we ran a series of after school workshops and I helped  our Mandarin & Phys Ed specialist teachers to use tellagami to present their use of video as an evaluation tool.  It worked well, as some teachers were off site at a sports event and appeared "virtually".
Gamis can be emailed, exported to Youtube, Facebook or Tweeted.  As a further extension you can save them to your iPad photos and combine them into an iMovie, like here in this Year 5 St Athony’s Marsfield Australian Government Report example explaining the Australian Parliament, or incorporated into an iMovie  http://vimeo.com/78411980, as shown by Greg Kulowiec, from EdTech Teacher.

Hi, thank you for your comment on Learning and Teaching with iPads, it is much appreciated. We are happy to publish it but could you please give us your name and organisation as we could not ascertain that from your comment. Regards Lisa Nash and Nicole Sprainger
